FAMILY CAMPS

One day and weekend camping programs, for families in Victoria who have a child or young adult with an acquired brain injury (ABI).  The camp provides a safe, welcoming and supportive environment where families can meet and share experiences and become part of a community of people who understand.

The camps are held at least twice a year for around 20 families from all over Victoria. Heads Together Camp is for the whole family and everyone is encouraged  to attend, including siblings, parents, grandparents, girlfriends/boyfriends etc.  The age range for children with an ABI is 2-21 years, however once families have joined the camp community there is no age limit. Participants are required to be medically stable and we recommend that families are at least six months post injury. Participants have varying levels of ability and mobility and are well supported with a large number of experienced volunteers. The camp structure includes small and large group activities that provide opportunities for building connections, trying new experiences and having lots of fun. There is also plenty of informal social time to allow families to get to know each other and build friendships.

Each camp is a mix of returning and new families (approx.75% returning and 25% new).  New families are provided with plenty of information and support prior to camp.  We recognise that it can be a daunting prospect and will talk you through the process so that you know exactly what to expect. Each camp is specifically planned to suit the needs of the families and we will work closely with you to ensure that camp is safe and enjoyable for everyone involved.  Families are not charged a fee to attend, however if they are financially able, families may make a small donation to the organisation to support the program.

Heads Together families are a strong and supportive community who stay connected between camps through our website, Heading Out social events,Facebook groups, family events and lots of informal catching up.

“It’s an opportunity to share experiences with others who truly understand you and truly care… It’s a weekend where it’s normal to be different.”  Parent 2006
